For many people the idea of renovating, converting or building a home of their own can seem an alien and frightening concept. It’s the sort of project usually reserved for those with deep pockets. Either that or it’s a specialised task for those in the know, which generally means building professionals – Architects, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and others, familiar with the tricks of the trade.

Why do we think like this? Most of us have a good grasp of design concepts and a growing awareness of what is possible to achieve in terms of renovation and conversion. The growth in media information; television series and magazines, available has seen to that. We all have practical capability.

The result is that, for the great majority of us, acquiring a new home means buying somebody else’s idea of what that home should be. Our choice of internal layout, its orientation and overall design, is actually quite limited. Unsurprisingly, our first reaction on moving in is to remodel to suit our individual tastes and styles. We create through lounges, convert kitchens, bathrooms, lofts, add on conservatories, build terraces, install pools. A result of this is a booming home improvement industry. The other is to over-inflate the cost – in time and effort, as well as cash – of home-ownership.

Self renovating is a way of cutting short that process by giving us exactly what we want from the beginning: a home styled the way we want, in the place where we want it. It’s about retaining ownership of how and where we live.
